What the role is
A performance coach helps a person clarify outcomes, examine the patterns affecting delivery, design practical changes and review evidence from real life. The focus may include work, leadership, training, recovery and decision-making. Coaching is non-clinical and should not replace healthcare, therapy or specialist technical advice.
A session should produce more than motivation
Good coaching may feel energising, but energy is not the deliverable. A session should improve the quality of a decision, expose a hidden constraint, create a testable action or make the next review more truthful.
The coach asks, challenges, reflects and helps structure the problem. They may share expertise when that is explicitly part of the arrangement, but should not disguise advice as a revelation you supposedly reached alone.
The four jobs of performance coaching
- Direction: define what matters and what does not.
- Diagnosis of the pattern—not the person: locate friction in workload, environment, skill or recovery.
- Design: turn the insight into a practical operating change.
- Review: use evidence, not shame, to decide what to keep or adjust.
Coaching, mentoring and therapy
A mentor usually brings experience in a specific path and may advise more directly. A consultant is typically hired to analyse and recommend. A therapist works within a qualified mental-health scope. A performance coach focuses on the client’s decisions, behaviour and systems.
These roles can overlap in style, but scope should remain explicit. If a coach cannot clearly explain what they do not do, that is useful information.
What recovery has to do with performance
Recovery determines which version of your capacity is available. A plan built for your best day will fail repeatedly on ordinary days. Recovery-led coaching therefore examines sleep, workload, training stress, boundaries and transitions alongside goals.
This is not lowering ambition. It is making execution less dependent on emergency levels of activation.
How to evaluate a coach
Ask for a clear explanation of process, scope, confidentiality, review points and fees. Be cautious around guaranteed outcomes, manufactured urgency, invented neuroscience and dependency framed as accountability.
A credible coach should help you become more capable of running the system—not more afraid to function without the coach.
Frequently asked questions
Who uses performance coaching?
Founders, leaders, athletes, creatives and professionals may use it when the challenge involves consistent execution, decisions, capacity or change.
Does a performance coach tell you what to do?
Sometimes expertise may be offered, but the core process should improve your own judgement and ownership rather than create dependency.
How quickly should coaching work?
There is no honest universal timeline. Agree what change would be observable and review the work at defined intervals.
